Phil Williams becomes Welsh Champion
Matchroom member Phil Williams (pictured below) lifted the Welsh Amateur Championship in Morriston on 15th July, 2007. Ex-professional Williams defeated two fellow ex-professionals on his way to lifting the very competitive national amateur title.

In the semi finals he overcame a strong challenge from Bargoed's Ian Sargeant. After falling 2- 1 behind Williams fought back strongly to win the last five frames without reply, running out a very worthy 6 - 2 winner.
In the other semi final, former world top 32 player Anthony Davies took on Newport's Darren Thompson. Thompson failed to capitalise on a 3 - 1 interval lead, eventually falling 6 - 3 to Davies (Barry).
In the final Williams took command early on and finished the first session 5 - 2 in front. Davies never recovered and Williams went on to close out a comfortable 8 - 3 victory.
It is Phil's first win in this event. He narrowly lost out last year to Jamie Jones from Neath, in what was regarded by many as one of the best Welsh finals for many years. Jones eventually winning the title 8 - 7 with a century break in the decider.
The Matchroom would like to pass on it's congratulations to Phil on this excellent achievement.
He is now eligible to represent Wales at the 2007 IBSF World Amateur Championships which will be held in Thailand or India.
