Griffiths and Owens take 2006 Lads and Dads Title

Lads and Dads winners 2006, Wayne Griffiths and David Owens pictured with international referee, John Pellew

Wayne Griffiths and David Owens (pictured above with referee for the final, John Pellew) were victorious in the 2006 Lads and Dads competition held at the Matchroom in December. Wayne left his dad, ex. world champion Terry Griffiths, on the subs bench as he called on the services of his father in law David Owens to make up the doubles dream team!

Wayne felt that the least David could do after saddling him with his eldest daughter, was to help him see off all challengers in the popular family event.

Griffiths and Owens managed to hold off a strong challenge from father and son duo, Phil and Barrie Clarke in the first round. A victory over Andrew Phillips and his dad then saw a very tight match against the previous winners Terry and Craig Jones from Burry Port.

In a ding-dong battle that could have gone either way, Griffiths managed a thirty break in the decider and this proved to be enough to just see them over the line.

In the other half of the draw, Welsh under 14 international Jamie Clarke and his dad Howie were showing the way. There most impressive result was a 2 - 0 victory over strongly fancied uncle and nephew pairing of Daniel Bowen and Andrew Morgan.

The final between the Clarkes and Griffiths and Owens was a tense affair. At one frame a piece, each player had a shot on the deciding black ball in the final frame. Eventually it was left to Wayne Griffiths to pot the black for victory.

Owens and Griffiths won an all expenses trip, including back stage passes, to the 2007 Welsh Open final in Newport.

There was also a plate event which was won by Jason and Matthew Humphries who managed to overcome Rob and Wayne Jones from Pembroke Dock. Again, this game could not have been closer, going down to the final black.

This popular event will run again in December, 2007 - keep an eye on notice boards for details of prizes and closing dates.

Thanks to all the members who once again supported this event.
